Mother Lode To Host International Fire Training Event

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA – Ten days of live fire operations are coming up in and around several Mother Lode communities in what organizers are describing as “a novel training event.”

A prescribed fire Training Exchange (TREX), scheduled to begin Monday, Nov. 5 and run through Nov. 16 will involve firing work on private lands around West Point, Glencoe, Wilseyville, Arnold, and Dorrington, so short-term smoke impacts may be evident in those areas.

According to organizers, although the participants, who represent park districts, fire departments, state forestry agencies, federal land management agencies, universities, consulting agencies, and conservation organizations mostly hail from California, some will be attending from as far away as British Columbia and Indonesia.

Mastering Art, Science Of Fire Management, Ecology

The stated goals of the training are to share knowledge and better understand the art and science of fire management and ecology. Among the study areas are burn planning and execution, fire effects monitoring, and communication to internal and external audiences regarding the role of fire and the need for prescribed burns for resilience and restoration.

Supported by a cooperative multi-agency agreement, the program involves The Nature Conservancy, USDA Forest Service, and agencies of the Department of the Interior. It also has CAL Fire funding and is a flagship initiatives of the State Fire MOU.

Along with firing operations training, the 20-plus participants involved will also attend classroom sessions and stay at Camp Lodestar in Wilseyville.
