Emergency Repairs To Shut Down Murphys Roadway
Murphys, CA – Over a mile of roadway will be closed to through traffic so road crews can make an urgent one day repair next week due to damaged done by the rainy winter.
Calaveras County Road Superintendent Scott Anderson explains it is a FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Category C Restoration project. He explains what workers will be fixing, “A full culvert replacement due to a failure that happened during the January storms. What happened was the amount of water that went through the pipe caused the roadway and the pipe to separate causing road failure. We put a big metal plate over the road for the winter so the water could subside. Due to the width of the road, less than 18 feet wide, we have to close the road down to where we can get this culvert in, in a timely manner.”
Calaveras County Public Works officials report that road crews will be working on a 1.7 mile stretch of Pennsylvania Gulch Road that runs from Highway 4 to Peppermint Creek. The roadway will be closed to all traffic during the emergency repairs, which will begin at 7 a.m. and run until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 9.
