California Energy Regulators Take Aim At Computers

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — New computers sold in California will need to be more energy efficient in the upcoming years.

The Associated Press reports that the California Energy Commission yesterday approved sweeping energy efficiency standards for computers and monitors. California becomes the first state to approve such rules. The commission claims that computers and monitors total 3% of residential electricity use and 7% of commercial use. By the year 2027, the amount of energy used by computers and monitors must decline by about 1/3. The new restrictions for computer makers will be rolled out starting in 2018.
