Supporters Of Marijuana Legalization File Lawsuit

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — A lawsuit has been filed in response to claims made about a ballot measure that will go before state voters this November.

Proponents of a measure to legalize recreational marijuana in California argue that opponents are trying to make inaccurate statements in the official ballot literature that will be mailed to voters. The Associated Press reports the group Yes on Proposition 64 filed a lawsuit in Sacramento County Superior Court asking a judge to amend or delete several arguments that opponents are making against the measure. Those include that the measure would undo consumer protections that Governor Brown recently signed into law and that it would roll back longstanding prohibitions of smoking advertisements on TV.

All of the ballot arguments must be finalized by August 15, according to state election officials, so that there is ample time for printing. How soon a judge might respond is not immediately clear. The election is coming up November 8.
