Fireworks Go On Sale In Calaveras County: Fire Officials Urge Caution
Calaveras County, CA — “Safe and Sane” fireworks went on sale in an estimated 300 communities across California yesterday, including portions of Calaveras County.
The Calaveras County Supervisors have long allowed the use of fireworks throughout most of Calaveras County, if labeled “Safe and Sane,” as many of the proceeds benefit youth and non-profits. However, the use of fireworks is banned in the Ebbetts Pass Fire Protection District, which includes communities stretching from Murphys up to the Alpine County border. Fireworks are also banned on all federal lands, including the Stanislaus National Forest.
Neighboring Tuolumne County has long had a complete ban on fireworks, regardless of the “Safe and Sane” label, due to safety and fire concerns.
CAL Fire reports that over the past five years there have been over 2,500 structure or wildland fires ignited by fireworks. State Fire Marshall Tonya Hoover says, “Illegal fireworks, or even the unsafe use of ‘Safe and Sane’ fireworks, are a major problem every year. We have a zero tolerance towards the possession, sale or use of illegal fireworks and our officers will be patrolling the streets and internet this week.”
Of note, Ironstone Vineyards will have its fireworks display Saturday evening, Lake McClure in Mariposa County will have fireworks on Saturday too, and so will Pine Mountain Lake.
Lake Don Pedro will not have fireworks this year.
CAL Fire has released the following tips regarding fireworks ahead of the Independence Day holiday:
• If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them.
• Buy only State Fire Marshal-approved (Safe and Sane) fireworks.
• Have a bucket of water and a hose handy.
• Always read directions and have an adult present.
• Use fireworks outdoors only.
• Parents are liable for any damage or injuries caused by their children using fireworks.
• Use common sense and keep a safe distance.
• Never attempt to re-light or “fix” fireworks.
