Jail Officers Injured In Struggle With Calaveras County Inmate
San Andreas, CA — Seven guards were needed to subdue the inmate after he threw himself over a railing at the Calaveras County Jail.
The incident happened at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Calaveras County Sheriff’s officials report that 28-year-old Gray Bond Gracy of Hayward left his top tier cell and jumped over the security railing landing on the bottom floor. As guards rushed to help him, Gracy began to fight them, according to corrections officials, who indicate Gracy became more combative once ambulance and fire crews arrived to give him medical attention. It took a total of seven correctional officers to restrain inmate Gracy enough to load him onto a gurney. He was taken to Mark Twain Medical Center for treatment and later released back to the jail. Three correctional officers were injured in the scuffle, consisting of scratches and a hand injury.
Gracy was originally arrested after law enforcement was called to a disturbance at a residence in the 8500 block of Owens Way in Valley Springs earlier this month. In that incident, Gracy was charged with a parole violation along with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Gracy now faces battery charges for attacking the guards.
Of note, sheriff’s officials indicate that this past Sunday Gracy attempted to push a guard down a flight of stairs. There is no word on whether he will face assault charges for that altercation. The corrections officer was not injured.
