Sacramento, CA — Young voters make up more than a third of the well over half-million Californians who registered or updated their information online since January.

Today, the Office of the Secretary of State, in reporting the figures, adds that the data does not include traditional paper registrations, which will also be reflected in the next complete statewide report on April 8.

“Online voter registration is empowering a new generation of Californians,” states Secretary of State Alex Padilla. Encouraging those who have not yet registered for the upcoming Presidential Primary Election vote, comments, “All eyes will be on California on June 7…the stakes could not be higher during this election season.”

For the first quarter of this year election officials report that completed new voter registrations or registration updates continued to surge up monthly through the voter registration website; voters ages 17 to 25 made up about 37 percent of the total over the period.
The monthly totals were 92,278 for January; 146,951, February; and 323,009, March. The Secretary of State’s Office reports that for all of 2014 the website processed 425,220 registrations or updates through the voter registration website.

Padilla suggests the uptrending registration figures indicate that elections officials throughout the state should be preparing for a surge in turnout on June 7. Describing the online process as quick, easy, smartphone friendly and available in ten languages, he adds,   “If you have already registered, reach out to eligible friends and family about the importance of registering and voting in this year’s election.” Citizens who are now 17 years of age who will be 18 or older by the next election can register.
