Tots, Cash And Rosie Rules

Angels Camp, CA — Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee officials have announced new events that include kids, cash and a challenge 30 years in the making to hop into the record books.

For three decades Rosie the Ribiter has ruled.  This year is the 30th anniversary of her world record leap of 21’ 53/4″.  That feat was set back in 1986.  Other frogs have come close to breaking the record, including a Sacramento frog that soared 21 feet, 4 and ¼ inches.  The prize for shattering the long-standing record is $5,000.

Additionally, what was once a tradition at the fair was brought back by popular demand.  Cash awards will once again be offered for an entrance fee of a dollar.  Exhibitors could win up to three bucks depending on whether they come in first, second or third.  Fair Manager Laurie Giannini indicates, “In a lot of conversations we’ve had with exhibitors, they really missed that.  It’s not like it’s a lot of money, it’s just getting the check.  No one’s going to get rich but it’s just a nice incentive and fun.”

New and fun for younger kids so they do not have to tag along as their older siblings show livestock is the new Pee Wee Showmanship event for those ages 5 to 8.  Giannini shares, “If they have a pet rock, they can show their rock or a fish or frog.  It’s just a way of getting the little people more involved in being part of the whole livestock program.” She adds kids can just show up and show at the event, which begins at 9 a.m. on May 21 at the Tower Pavilion.  The fair and jubilee runs from May 19-22.
