Lessons From The Rim Fire

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — This weekend’s Mother Lode Views focuses on the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, which was created by the state of California over a decade ago and delves into several critical issues in the Sierra Nevada region.

The guest will be the Conservancy Executive Officer Jim Branham. This month the conservancy held its meeting in Sonora and went on a tour of the Rim Fire burn scar. The topics to be addressed will include observations from that viewing, his definition of a “healthy forest” and what can be learned from devastating wildfires like the Butte and Rim fires. Branham explains one of the big lessons learned by the Rim Fire, “If we can be more proactive, be out there restoring, thinning and doing more  ecologically sound work in the forest, we can mitigate these kind of events from occurring. We know that when we do these certain types of activities the fire behavior does change.” Branham adds that change can be positive and the clearings can give firefighters a place to make a stand against the flames.

Mother Lode Views airs Saturday and Sunday morning at 9:30 on AM-1450 KVML. Mother Lode Views can also be heard Sunday morning at 10 o’clock on 93.5 KKBN and at 9am on STAR 92.7.
