Sierra Snow Closes Highway 108 Sonora Pass
Sonora, CA — While rained in most of the Mother Lode Thursday, some of the higher elevation areas got snow, which caused Caltrans to shutdown Highway 108 Sonora Pass at 4 p.m.; it is the first mountain pass closure of the season.
Caltrans spokesperson Rick Estrada says the steep roadways, high elevations and narrow lanes leading to the pass are the reasons. “it cannot accommodate snow removal equipment and vehicle traffic at the same time…so they’ve closed it at the Kennedy Meadows point of State Highway 108.”
As far as when it will open again, Estrada states, “That’s always a popular question…that will depend on how much snow falls and how quickly we’re not only able to remove it from the roadway, but then to go in and inspect the roadway to make sure no damage has occurred during that snowfall period.”
Estrada adds that Caltrans was not currently able to estimate the snowfall amount.
