Angels Camp, CA – A carjacker led police on a high-speed chase through Calaveras County after trying to run over the driver of the car he stole.

Angels Camp Police report the carjacking happened around 1:40 p.m., Tuesday, on the 200 block of South Main Street. When officers arrived on the scene, they found an injured man lying on the ground. Officers report he had been injured when the carjacker tried to run over him as he sped away with the car, heading north. A little while later, a Calaveras County Sheriff’s deputy spotted the vehicle northbound on Highway 49 in San Andreas. The deputy attempted to pull the driver over using the patrol car’s flashing lights and siren, but the suspect took off, driving erratically and heading westbound on Highway 12, according to police.  Once in Wallace, the driver lost control of the car, went off the highway and flipped.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Andrew Taormina, of Lodi, suffered minor injuries in the wreck. He was booked in to the Calaveras County Jail on charges of carjacking, robbery, vehicle theft, assault with a deadly weapon, evading a peace officer, and reckless driving with injury. Also assisting in the pursuit was the California Highway Patrol.
