Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — School enrollment in Tuolumne County has been in a downward trend since 1997.

The numbers were compiled by the Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Office. Tuolumne County’s school enrollment peaked during the 1997-98 school year, with 8,220 students, but the numbers have been generally declining ever since.

Based on current trends, the California Department of Finance recently compiled school enrollment projections for the next decade. The state is anticipating that Tuolumne County’s school population will continue to gradually decline, and be at 5,972 by the 2023-2024 school year.

Recent census figures also revealed that Tuolumne County’s overall population declined last year to 53,887. Only 12 of California’s 58 counties lost residents.
