No Supermajority For California Democrats

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — Democrats will easily remain the majority party at the state capitol in Sacramento, but Republicans did gain some seats.

The Associated Press reports that the GOP was able to wrestle away two Orange County Senate seats from Democrats, and one in Los Angeles County’s Antelope Valley. Democrats are expected to hold 26 Senate seats, and Republicans 14. Democrats needed 27 seats to have a supermajority.

Having a supermajority is considered significant, because it would theoretically allow for the passage of tax increases without any Republican support.

It remains unclear how the margin will unfold in the Assembly, as some races are still considered too close to call. Democrats are projected to have won all of the statewide races, including Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General and State Controller.
