Acreage Hike in Yosemite Fire

Sponsored by:

Foresta, CA — The Dog Rock Fire has grown from 150 to 210 acres with no containment.

“The fire actually hasn’t moved very much,” says Ranger Kari Cobb.  “It is definitely not much growth so we are making progress.”

Cobb says the terrain is very rugged and the hope is that the flames will migrate into El Portal Fire footprint, which was burning in July.  She says the lack of vegetation there should help to put out the flames.

Evacuation orders are still in place for 60 homes in the Foresta community, but most of those homes are recreational.  Highway 140 remains closed at the Arch Rock Entrance Station, but Highway 120 and all other entrances into the park are open.

Much of the Yosemite Valley has been without power since last night.  Park officials hope to have the electricity restored later today.  The cause of the fire has not been determined. Cal Fire has grounded all air tankers like the one that crashed. However, U.S. Forest Service planes will still be used to battle the blaze.
