A Review Of Charter Schools And Compensation
Sonora, CA– The Tuolumne County Board of Education is scheduled to meet next Monday. They will review several policies including Charter Schools and County Superintendent Compensation.
Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools, Joe Silva, says all board policies have a review process and the board is required to review each of them regularly. He says when they discuss the Charter School policy they will determine if it is current or needs changes, and compare it to what the California School Board Association recommends. He also says, “There are no problems with the charter schools in Tuolumne County currently.” Any policy changes the board proposes will be put on the agenda for a later meeting.
The board has also been reviewing the Superintendent compensation policy for the incoming County Superintendent Margie Bulkin. Silva says, “The board reviewed the other 57 county compensation policies and found there really is no standard in what they offer.” Silva notes “There isn’t a strong viewpoint that [our policy] needs to change, as far as I have heard at other meetings.”
Margie Bulkin is currently the Deputy Superintendent of Schools. She ran unopposed and was elected in June, Silva will retire at the end of December. Silva says, “When a person runs for a public office the board sets a salary for that person. That is the same with all the elected positions in our county. Margie’s salary was set when she filed at $135,000.”
Silva says, September meetings are usually shorter meetings. The meeting is open to the public and held at the County Schools Office Room 217 at 175 South Fairview Lane in Sonora on Monday, September 8th at 4:00pm.
