Tree Crashed Onto House

Mi-Wuk Village, CA — A tree smashed into a Mi-Wuk Village home narrowly missing a baby sleeping in his crib. It happened Wednesday around 9:30 p.m. on Lama Road.

When Mi-Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District firefighters arrived on the scene, they found a dead, 80-foot pine tree from a neighbor’s yard had landed on the roof of the two story home. Four people, two adults and two children, were in the house when the tree came crashing down.

“There were no injuries,” says Fire Chief Larry Crabtree. “We were very fortunate that even though the tree put a hole in the roof and the ceiling and debris landed on the floor in the baby’s room, the baby was in bed, they were very lucky that the baby was not injured.”

The tree also punched a hole in the master bedroom and caused structural damage to the house.  The tree broke into several pieces. One large section remains on the roof.

Chief Crabtree says, “It was in a precarious position where if it had rolled off the roof it would have taken out the power lines so we had PG & E come out and disconnect electric service to the house.”

Crabtree believes strong winds caused the tree to snap.  He estimates the damage could add up to $50K and it could take six weeks to repair the home.
