Welcome to the Tuolumne County Commission on Aging blog: it’s our ongoing effort to bring information to help and inform seniors in our county. Stay tuned for more information on matters of interest to county seniors! And please feel free to let us know YOUR ideas for events or forums that you want to see. We actively solicit your comments. “Jots & Thoughts”

  1. Senior Stats: “The latest information released from the decennial U.S. Census count shows an aging Mother Lode population with growing ethnic diversity…The median age in California as a whole was 35 in 2010. In Tuolumne County, it was 47 and in Calaveras County 49, the report said.” Further stats: “Those 50 to 65 make up 25.6 percent of the population in Tuolumne County and 27.7 percent in Calaveras County.” By Lacey Peterson, The Union Democrat May 19, 2011. Dr. Todd Stolp, Tuolumne County’s public health officer, was quoted last year as saying “19.6 percent of the county’s population is 65 and above. That compares to the state average of 11.2 percent.”
Conclusion: we have a whole slew of senior issues and needs for these kinds of numbers.
  2. Past Commissioners!: The Tuolumne County Commission on Aging (COA) wants to let any former COA commissioners know that we’d like to contact you to get your input on senior issues and concerns, then and now. If you see this appeal, and want to participate, please contact Carleton Penwell at 209-532-8583 or by email at: carpat@mlode.com .
  3. Good info and interesting reading: According to Joan Aragone (a columnist for the San Mateo County Times) who wrote a piece entitled: “Why older brains don’t multi-task like they used to” Take a peek!
  4. From Commissioner Cathie Peacock at Interfaith: “Is it still tough for you to clean up after this spring’s storms? Interfaith has a wood donation program. Our crews can come and cut it, load it and haul it off as long as the tree is on the ground and easily accessible. We give it away in August to our low-income and no-income clients to heat their houses the following winter. To donate your tree or wood, call Barbara Woodward at Interfaith, 532-0905. And to sign up for the program to receive ½ cord free firewood, call Interfaith in August.”
  5. Groveland report: The Commission met in Groveland at the Little House Monday June 13, 2011. We are excited about joining forces with more South County residents who are interested in being involved with the Commission’s senior issues and events. Commissioner Luci Tyndall, Administrative Services Coordinator at Little House, is instrumental in coordinating our mutual efforts. County Board of Supervisors Chair John Gray spoke before the commission that day. We thank John for his time, and most interesting information.
