Controversy Over Fort Ord Cleanup Grows

Sponsored by:

Rockets, grenades, mortars, bullets and other potentially lethal scrap lie unexploded in the brush at the decommissioned Fort Ord military base near Monterey.

A dispute over air pollution and endangered species has left the U.S. Army unable to finish cleaning it up.

The Army wants to burn the dense brush so it can more easily remove the explosives left after 77 years as a training post. But the area is home to endangered and threatened species.
