Uncertainity of Prosecution in Sierra Fire

Sponsored by:

California forestry officials are undecided whether to pursue charges against two Truckee-area teenagers
whose escaped campfire led to a 14-thousand-500-acre forest fire east of Truckee in June.

C-D-F officials have ruled out any negligence on the part
of a C-D-F crew charged with putting out a small fire that grew out of the campfire. C-D-F officials say the crew´s plans to check the fire area again the next
morning were delayed and the fire rekindled, escaping containment lines and igniting the June 17th Martis Fire.

Truckee-area fire officials have said the
crew´s failure to inspect the site contributed to the Martis Fire. The Sierra fire along the Nevada border cost about 18 and a half million dollars to suppress, and
put homes in Reno and Lake Tahoe in danger until it was contained July 1st.
