Manteca MTBE Cleanup Continues

Sponsored by:

San Joaquin County officials say they´re continuing to clean up MTBE for Manteca residents whose neighborhood has been contaminated.

The county is also trying to find an alternate water source for the residents.

MTBE was added to gasoline statewide to reduce air pollution. It has been linked to cancer in animal studies and is being phased out.

It was found in Manteca when gasoline-storage tanks were removed from a service station in 1998. Twelve of 60 private wells in the area were affected.

The device being used to clean up the water treats it between the well and homes.

County officials hooked up properties to 1,000-gallon tanks in residents´ yards. The city provided water for the tanks from fire hydrants.
