Attorney General Suing False Privacy Service

Sponsored by:

California´s attorney general is suing a company he says is operating a bogus consumer privacy service.

He alleges the California Consumer Center is falsely telling consumers it´s working with the attorney general´s office to protect people from telemarketers.

Officials say the company charges people for a service it can´t provide – and also records their financial information.

Company officials aren´t immediately responding.

Governor Davis signed a law last year that requires the attorney general´s office to keep lists of people who don´t want to receive calls from telemarketers. But the government-run service has not yet begun operation.

California has until next April to get the service up and running.
