Sequoia National Forest Restoration Underway

Sponsored by:

A three million dollar emergency project is underway to begin restoring the charred landscape where one of California’s worst wildfires this summer threatened groves of giant sequoias. The fire blackened more than 150-thousand acres in the Sequoia National Forest, Giant Sequoia National Monument and Inyo National Forest.

It took 60 million dollars, two thousand firefighters and six weeks to contain one of the five worst fires in California history. The U.S. Forest Service is drawing up restoration plans including soliciting bids from timber companies to log the damaged trees. That already is leading to clashes with environmentalists who say the trees should be left to feed new trees and wildlife that will sprout up naturally.
