All They Want Is A Home With A Yard

Sponsored by:

For the second straight year, an overwhelming number of Californians are telling pollsters what state homebuilders always tell lawmakers trying to steer growth back into cities.

They want a single-family home with a yard. And they want to drive – usually alone – to work.

Nearly nine in ten of more than two thousand adults interviewed in a survey by the Public Policy Institute of California – say they want a house with a lawn and a garage. Nearly four in ten cite safety as the biggest reason. That’s nearly double the number citing schools or more space.

The findings have major policy overtones. Some lawmakers want to steer more growth into existing cities. Every year California loses 50,000 acres of farmland to new development.
