Felipe Alou Named Giants Manager

It´s a homecoming for new San Francisco Giants manager Felipe Alou.

The 67-year-old skipper began his playing career in 1958 with the Giants — their first season in San Francisco after moving from New York.

Alou signed a three-year contract with the Giants. The terms were not disclosed. Alou managed the Montreal Expos for 10 seasons. He was fired during the 2001 season after posting a record of 691 victories and 717 losses. He was a bench coach for the Detroit Tigers this past season.

Alou takes over for Dusty Baker, who led the Giants to within six outs of a World Series championship. The popular Baker´s contract was not renewed. Baker is talking with the Chicago Cubs about becoming their manager.

General Manager Brian Sabean says the team is thrilled to have the native of the Dominican Republic back. Alou used the same word to describe his feelings about returning to the Giants.

As he put it — “I´m thrilled to go back where it all started for me.”

Alou hit .286 with 206 homers and 852 runs batted in over the course of a 17-year playing career.
