Excuse The Mess, Roads Under Construction
Work has begun on widening the Greenley Road Mono Way intersection in Sonora.
City administrator Greg Applegate says though construction will snarl traffic in the area, the project is welcomed.
“That critical portion…the one lane is certainly going to provide some relief for that intersection,” Applegate said.
Applegate reported the $278,000 construction bid – awarded to local firm On-Grade construction – came in $70,000 under what the city had planned to pay for the work.
As most motorists have experienced firsthand, traffic flow, especially in the area of the new Sonora Community Hospital, Highway 108 bypass, Sanguinetti Road railroad crossing and Mono Way/Greenley Road, is a mess right now due to the multiple construction projects.
Applegate said city of Sonora officials are pushing contractors to get the work completed before the holidays.
“When you couple the by-pass project with the railroad project and the Mono/Greenley project, we´re going to have a lot of construction going on in the area,” Applegate said. “Hopefully for the city, and the merchant´s benefit out in that area, we can have most of this done during the month of October and November.”
Applegate says plans are to complete the railroad crossing improvement and Greenley intersection work before the holiday rush, but weather always plays a factor in meeting the deadlines.
