State Budget An Issue In Race For Governor

Sponsored by:

California has screamed along a fiscal roller coaster the past four years as it enjoyed record surpluses then plunged into the red. As a result, Governor Gray Davis´ handling of the budget has become a key issue in his race against Republican financier Bill Simon.

The winner on November 5th will be faced with sagging revenues and a sour economy. Many say California could be strapped with multi-billion dollar deficits for the next half-decade. Davis signed a 98.9 billion dollar budget September 5th that uses a combination of cuts, borrowing and increases to the state’s revenues. Simon continues to criticize Davis´ handling of the budget but has provided few concrete details about his plans.
