Psychiatrist Says Stayner Has Mental Illnesses

Sponsored by:

A psychiatrist who examined Yosemite killer Cary Stayner testified in court today. He says the motel handyman suffered from a long list of mental illnesses.

Doctor Jose Arturo Silva says he diagnosed Stayner with anxiety disorder, pedophilia and marijuana abuse. Silva says Stayner also exhibited all the signs of a chronic hair pulling disorder.

The 40-year-old Stayner faces the death penalty if convicted of murdering Carole Sund and her daughter Juli, of Eureka, and their Argentine friend Silvina Pelosso. They were killed in February 1999 when they were staying at the rustic motel where Stayner worked outside Yosemite National Park.

Stayner already is serving a life sentence without the chance of parole after pleading guilty in federal court to killing nature guide Joie Armstrong in July 1999.
