Giant Fire Burning In Tulare County

Sponsored by:

The U.S. Forest Service says a huge fire burning out of control in Central California has grown to 48,000 acres. Fire officials say the fire likely was started by an escaped campfire. They say a woman is being sought for questioning, but no arrests have been made. The fire started Sunday and has grown by thousands of acres each day. It´s burning in and around Giant Sequoia National Monument, which is in Sequoia National Park. The fire has reached within two miles of the Trail of 100 Giants, a grove of towering trees that are among the largest and oldest on earth. The blaze is only 30% contained, and fire officials say it´s hard to tell which way it´ll burn next. The Forest Service says protecting the park´s biggest trees is a top priority. Some 200 homes are threatened and one thousand people have been evacuated.
