Logging Industry Rejected

Sponsored by:

A Sacramento County Superior Court judge has rejected objections from the logging industry that likely would have killed a proposed November initiative banning the cutting of old-growth trees.

The California Forestry Association argues the official wording of the initiative amounts to political rhetoric.

Proponents say an adverse ruling would have prevented them from gathering the more than 400-thousand signature they need by April to put the measure on the fall ballot.

Their initiative would ban the cutting of most trees that were alive when California became a state in 1850.

The timber industry says the date has no scientific basis.
