Worker’s Compensation Gets Raise

Sponsored by:

Legislation that will increase workers´ compensation benefits by more than 300 dollars over the next four years has been signed into law by Governor Davis.

The new law brings the first increase in benefits since 1996.

It also includes the first boost for permanently disabled workers since 1984 while doubling death benefits for families of workers killed on the job from 160-thousand to 320-thousand dollars.

A group of union leaders and construction watched Davis sign the bill during a ceremony today in Century City.

Many employers oppose the legislation.

Lori Kammerer, executive director of the California Coalition on Workers Compensation, an employers group, says it will sponsor “clean-up” language this year to modify the bill.
