Forest Service Wants Dead Trees Removed

Sponsored by:

The U.S. Forest Service says it will remove 80 percent of dead trees from more than 2,400-acres burned last August west of Lake Tahoe. Environmentalists say the forest service should leave more trees. They say the plan concentrates too heavily on removing wood that could feed another fire.

The plan affects only the portion of the “Star fire” that burned in Eldorado National Forest. The Tahoe National Forest is expected to release a draft proposal for restoring its portion of the burned area later this month.

The fire burned more than 16,000-acres in Placer County south of Interstate 80 near French Meadows Reservoir – including 1,000-acres of the Duncan Canyon Roadless Area.
