Local Math Professor Receives State Teaching Award

Columbia College Professor John Leamy was recently named one of eight recipients of the annual Teaching Excellence Awards by the California Mathematics Council – Community Colleges (CMC3).

Leamy has taught mathematics for 36 years and has been affiliated with the Yosemite Community District since 1982 at both Columbia College and Modesto Junior College.

According to Larry Green, chairperson of the CMC3 awards committee, “John Leamy was selected for his ability to encourage students to use their critical thinking skills as he assists them through problem solving.”

“Leamy´s teaching philosophy is that math can be interesting and enjoyable at all levels, especially when taught in a cultural context,” said Green. “He guides students to explore mathematical relations by providing connections to history and application when possible.”

Leamy is also credited with developing a math program for prospective elementary school teachers during his first year of teaching, has been a member of the Stanislaus Math Council for 20 years, co-chairs the organization´s Annual Junior High Math Contest, and serves on the statewide committee for the Presidential Awards in Mathematics Teaching.

This fall, Leamy was also elected as president of the California Mathematics Council – Central Section. As such, he will serve a two-year term at statewide and national meetings.
