Poll: Bush´s Approval Slips in California

Sponsored by:

A Field Poll released today says fewer than half of California’s voters approve of President Bush’s performance in office. Just 46 percent of the 649 registered voters questioned said they approve of Bush’s conduct while 48 percent disapprove.

In an August poll, 50 percent of those questioned praised Bush’s performance, while 45 percent were critical.

Bush’s ratings in California have been dropping since 76 percent of California voters backed him in December 2001, after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. In a poll taken immediately before the attacks, only 41 percent approved of Bush’s conduct while 48 percent were critical.

California voters gave Bush positive ratings on only one subject: reducing the terrorist threat. 64 percent supported him and 31 percent disapproved of his performance in that area.

Those surveyed gave Bush much lower marks in his overall handling of foreign affairs, with 46 percent approving and 49 percent disapproving. He was also dinged on the situation in Iraq, with only 40 percent approving and 52 percent disapproving.
