CHP Agrees to Paycuts in Wake of Budget Crisis

Union leaders representing California Highway Patrol officers have agreed to paycuts in hopes of avoiding possible layoffs.
A negotiator for the governor´s office says the CHP union has agreed to give up more than half of its nearly eight percent raise.
Nearly 1,100 officers received notice last month that they may be laid off this fall because of the state´s fiscal problems. Negotiators say officers will get an additional day off each month and their health care costs will be capped if a majority of the 6,100 union members accept the concessions.
The give-backs are expected to save the state $19 million.
The Davis administration is negotiating with about 20 unions to save hundreds of millions of dollars.
