High School Exit Exam Could be Delayed

Next year´s high school seniors could be granted a breather from the state´s requirement that they pass the California High School Exit Exam to get a diploma. The State Board of Education will vote today on whether to delay the requirement.

The class of 2004 was supposed to be the first that would have to pass the exam to graduate, under the 1999 law. Students have eight chances to take the test during their high school years.

State Schools Superintendent Jack O´Connell has urged the board to delay the exam requirement. O´Connell says he believes the board will do so in light of a report that found about 20% of the class of 2004 would fail the math portion and wouldn´t graduate.
