Lake Tahoe Land Bought By Forest Service

Sponsored by:

High Meadows, at nearly 18,000 acres, the largest single-owner private holding in the Lake Tahoe Basin, has been acquired by the U.S. Forest Service in a $29.5 million deal.

The deal with the owners of the old Trimmer Ranch holdings, owned by the family since 1905, was announced by the Forest Service and the American Land Conservancy. The acquisition follows more than a decade of discussions with Shirley Trimmer Giovacchini, who died in late 2001, her husband, the late Roy Giovacchini, their three daughters and their husbands.

The land is just south of Heavenly Valley ski resort on the Nevada-California border. It has been described as “the real Heavenly Valley” by some locals because of its lush meadows and fields of red columbine, purple larkspur and wild delphinium. Deer, bear and other wildlife roam the area.
