School Taking Pledge Ruling To The Supreme Court

Sponsored by:

The Elk Grove Unified School District will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn an appeals court ruling that found the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional.

The ruling takes effect next Monday, but the district is asking for it to be stayed while it seeks the Supreme Court review. District superintendent Dave Gordon says Elk Grove students will recite the Pledge of Allegiance for the rest of the week. If the stay isn´t extended, teachers will lead their classes in other patriotic exercises, such as a poem or a song.

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals let stand an earlier ruling that bars reciting the pledge in public schools because of the words “under God.” The ruling affects nine western states and Guam.

The case was brought by a Sacramento atheist who objected to his third grade daughter having to pledge allegiance to God as part of her daily school routine.
