Groveland Woman Survives 500-Foot Plunge In Car

A Groveland woman survived a nearly 500-foot plunge in her car off Wards Ferry Road in the Tuolumne River Canyon earlier this week.

The California Highway Patrol says 38 year-old Suzanne Guthridge was driving south on the twisting and narrow portion of Wards Ferry road Tuesday and reached over to retrieve a pack of cigarettes on the floorboard of her 1991 Toyota Corolla.

Authorities say her car ran off the roadway, plunging nearly 500 feet down a steep embankment. Guthridge spent the night in her car waiting until morning to climb back to the roadway. She was spotted by two passing bicycle riders who called 911.

Amazingly, the woman suffered only minor cuts, abrasions, back and neck pain.
