Man Arrested Atop Golden Gate Bridge

A man was arrested at the top of the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. The California Highway Patrol says the man climbed a cable to the south tower. He was arrested at about 11:30 a.m. today.

The man, who is in his 40s, has not been identified. The CHP says it´s not clear why he climbed to the top of the tower. Bridge district spokeswoman Mary Currie says the man was spotted soon after he started ascending the cable. He was apprehended at the top of the tower by bridge officers and iron workers.

The man could be charged with trespassing, which carries a maximum $10,000 fine.
