Herbicides Now Being Sprayed in Forestland

Sponsored by:

On Monday, the U.S. Forest Service began the controversial practice of spraying herbicides in some forestland that´s recovering from wildfires near Groveland. Officials say the chemicals will kill brush and grass that competes with young trees for water during the dry summer months.

John Schmechel with Forest Service says “any competing vegetation out there…like grass or brush, can really take away water resources from the trees we plant.”

Some environmentalists worry that the chemicals may be harmful to people and the environment. But the Forest Service maintains that the spraying is safe.

The spraying will be done until the middle of next month.
