Judge´s Decision Could Stop North Coast Logging

Sponsored by:

A judge has issued two tentative decisions that could curtail logging on 200,000-and-11,000 acres of Pacific Lumber land on the North Coast.

Humboldt County Judge John Golden ruled yesterday that state forest officials didn´t follow their own rules when they agreed to the company´s plans to harvest timber. The judge says those plans should be ified.

Golden wrote that former state forestry Director Richard Wilson didn´t follow state rules when he approved the plan, which guides Pacific Lumber´s harvest over 100 years. The state, the company and environmentalists may submit revised arguments based on the tentative rulings. A hearing is scheduled for June 30th. The pair of related lawsuits were filed in 1999.
