License Plate Bill OK´d By Assembly

Californians could get special vehicle license plates to support their favorite sports teams or honor their pets if legislation approved by the state Assembly becomes law. But the two bills could run into a roadblock in the state Senate, which isn´t scheduling hearings on special license plate legislation.

One of the bills would require the Department of Motor Vehicles to issue license plates honoring a particular professional or collegiate team if at least 7,500 motorists requested them. Fees paid for the plates would be used to help fund high school and college athletic programs for women.

The other bill would require the DMV to design special license plates depicting a dog, a cat or both animals. Fees for those plates would be used to help pay for animal facilities as well as spay, neuter and adoption programs.
