Health Officer Would be Surprised if Mine Caused Health Problems

Federal Officials are now collecting information about radiation exposure from an old abandoned uranium mine in Tuolumne County. The US Forest Service this week closed a Stanislaus National Forest road and abandoned uranium mine area after determining several rocks were emitting high levels of radiation.

Tuolumne County Health Officer Dr. Todd Stolp says it´s too early to say whether people who had been in the area are at risk of health problems. “At this point, it´s premature to come to that conclusion,” he said. “But, looking at the data, I would be surprised if we were to find that this was a serious threat,” he said. It will take about two months for the studies to be complete, according to Stolp.

The Forest Service closed the Juniper Uranium Mine and Forest Road 5N313 near Kennedy Meadows Resort this week.
