Driver’s Name Released In Fatal Caltrans Crash

The name of the Caltrans truck driver killed in an accident Friday morning has been released.
The Mariposa County Coroner reports 53 year-old Chester Ray Hawkins of Groveland was killed when his three-axle dump truck plunged down a 600 foot cliff along a remote section of Highway 49 between the communities of Coulterville and Mariposa.
The large Caltrans truck overturned as it plunged down the embankment, ejecting the driver then landing upside down. Hawkins was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cause of the accident has not yet been released.
