A scrub jay found dead in Angels Camp on July 29 was the first bird found in Calaveras County to have carried the virus.

Health experts continue to emphasize infection can be prevented by avoiding exposure to mosquitoes.

Wear long sleeves and long pants if you can and use bug-repellent containing DEET.

As of Thursday, there had been 189 human cases of West Nile virus in California and six confirmed deaths.
