FireSafe Program Celebrates Another Successful Season

It´s not just about fire safety, it´s also about generating clean energy.

The Highway 108 FireSafe Program has wrapped up another successful season. President John Hardin says they´ve grown the number of homes served this year.

“We went from 3,500 to 10,000 homes… this year. Next year, we´re adding Ponderosa Hills, Tuolumne City, [and] Long Barn. We´ll soon have almost all of the conifer forest area above 3,500 feet in the program,” Hardin said in an interview Tuesday.

The FireSafe Program takes brush and material cleared to make defensible space around houses and converts it into energy with the help of Sierra Pacific Industries.

Hardin says it´s a labor of love and funding for the project comes from government grants.

“I work free, and we get a grant to make it possible. If you were trying to set this up as a business, it would not succeed,” Hardin admits.
