Indian Tribes’ Slot Machine Monopoly Could End

Sponsored by:

Proponents moved a step closer today to collecting signatures for a measure that would end Indian tribes´ monopoly on slot machines.

The state attorney general approved the measure but now the secretary of state must give the okay before proponents can begin collecting the 1/2 million signatures needed to put the initiative before voters in November.

The California Police Chiefs Association says it´s opposed to allowing slot machines at race tracks and non-Indian card clubs. The chiefs say that would dramatically expand casino gambling by putting 30,000 slot machines in 16 urban locations.

Hollywood Park in Inglewood would become one of the world´s largest casinos, and even the smallest casinos would have several hundred slot machines.
