Recount Underway in Sonora City Council Race

Sponsored by:

The race was so close… they´re doing a manual recount.

Tuesday´s election for the City of Sonora had four candidates running for three seats. Mayor Marlee Powell and Council member Ron Stearns were the clear frontrunners.

But the race for third place was very, very tight.

Tuolumne County Elections Clerk Tim Johnson says they´re required to hand-check one precinct during an election like this… but in addition…

“Since it´s so close between Mr. Sheppard and Mr. Garaventa, we´re just going to hand-count the precincts in the city.”

Candidate Jim Garaventa had four fewer votes… than Incumbent David Sheppard at the end of last night´s count.

The latest count indicated Sheppard had 617 votes, and Garaventa had 613.

Johnson also says they´re not just fulfilling requirements. They´re also relieving the anxious candidates who are on pins and needles for a final result.

“We´re gonna try to be cognizant of their feelings to try and get it done as quickly as possible.

The manual recount should be done by this Friday. As many as 1,600 additional absentee ballots have yet to be counted as well.
