UC Researchers Say HIV Population Up Since 1998

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — A new study on the spread of AIDS says there are now more than 151,000 people in California living with HIV.

The report from researchers at the University of California says the number of people with HIV in the state is the most ever, and continues to grow even though new infection rates have decreased from the early years of the epidemic.

In 1998, an estimated 108,000 Californians were HIV positive. Researchers say improved drugs that help people with the disease live longer is one of the reasons there are more people with HIV.

But the report says there are indications that progress in fighting the disease may be slowed by an increase in high-risk behavior. The report was released in conjunction with World AIDS Day today.
