California National Guard Deploys For Katrina Cleanup And Policing

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — More than 500 California National Guard troops will be heading to the Gulf states through Saturday.

That makes a total of about 1500 emergency workers from the state sent to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Most troops will provide security as the devastated areas struggle with looting and civil unrest. The state also is sending specialists in search-and-rescue, communications, airlifting cargo and humanitarian aid.

Some help from California is already at the scene. Sacramento Fire Captain Greg Powell says he had been pulling people from their homes and into a 14-foot, flat-bottom boat since he arrived Wednesday.
